Hello SRI Families! May is here and our staff and students are gearing up for SOL testing in a few weeks! This is a critical time to help your child prepare for these important standardized tests. Many of our teachers are providing review packets/activities that you can use to help prepare your child for the SOLs. Please ensure your child attends school and gets a good night’s rest before taking a test. Here is a general timeline for testing. Teachers will send out specific dates for their class.

• Friday, May 10th - Monday, May 13th - 5th Grade Integrated Reading & Writing (IRW) SOL

• Tuesday, May 14th - Friday, May 17th -  4th & 5th Grade Reading SOLs

• Monday, May 20th & Tuesday, May 21st - 5th Grade Science SOL

• Wednesday, May 22nd & Thursday, May 23rd - 4th Grade Math SOL

• Friday, May 24th - SOL Makeups 

• Tuesday, May 28th & Wednesday, May 29th - 5th Grade Math SOL

• Thursday, May 30th & Friday, May 31st - 5th Grade Virginia Studies

• Monday, June 3rd - Friday, June 7th - SOL Makeups & Expedited Testing

Teacher Appreciation Week is May 6th-10th. It’s such a wonderful opportunity to express gratitude for the incredible work educators do every day. Let’s show how much we appreciate our SRI teachers during this time!

We are continuing to monitor students behavior and assist students with making appropriate and healthy choices while at school. We are committed to providing a safe learning environment for ALL of our students, and we need your help to reinforce the expected behaviors each day. Please remind your child that threats to self and others are unacceptable. SRI takes all threats seriously. A little kindness goes a long way!

As we begin to wrap up the 2023-2024 school year, continue to stay connected with your child’s teacher. There will be a lot of things happening as we finish the year and we want to make sure that our parents are in the loop.

PTA News & Events

Teacher and Staff Teacher Appreciation Week is May 6th - May 10th!  Help us celebrate our Totally 90s week at SRI by picking one day or more to make your child's teacher feel special.

• Monday: Bring your teacher their favorite snack to kick off the week! 

• Tuesday: Bring your teacher their favorite flower or color them a picture of their favorite flower.

• Wednesday: It’s almost the end of the year, bring your teacher a school supply they may need to finish out the year!

• Thursday: Make your teacher a THANK YOU card! 

• Friday: Bring your teacher something of your choice to show your appreciation!

Don’t forget about our resource teachers too! Make them a card to show how much you appreciate them! 

Again, these are all just suggestions!

Library News

We are getting close to the end of the year. All books will be due on May 31st. Remind students that if they have turned in all of their books and have no fines, they will receive a book to take home. The last day of checkout will be May 24th.

SOL Review Websites: The following websites are great resources to help your child review for the SOLs.

• Clever-students can access websites like Brainpop, Dreambox, eSpark, Flocabulary, and more!  

• eMediaVA-Videos, articles links to information on all subjects.

• Jefferson Lab -Review Math and Science with practice questions.

• Khan Academy-Review lessons with videos and practice activities for reading and math.

• TestNav Practice Tests-Practice Tests available for all 4th and 5th grade SOLs.

4th Grade News

In 4th grade we are going full force into SOL review to get us ready for our Math and reading tests. In addition to review, in math we are finishing up our school year with all of our Geometry units. In science we are looking at plants and animal adaptations.

5th Grade News

We can't believe SOL season is almost here! This month, your child will continue to review the skills they have learned this year in reading, science, Virginia Studies, and math to help prepare for their SOL tests this month. Please make sure that your child is well rested and ready to learn each and every day! We encourage you to review skills with your child at home as well to help prepare your child. We thank you for your continued support.

Character Counts @ SRI: Jr. Brave of the Month

Each month our Jr. Braves are introduced to a new character trait.  At the end of the month, each class selects a student that displayed the trait for that month. 

April: Cooperation

Someone who works well with others.  An individual who displays teamwork skills and the ability to compromise. Click here to access the names of our April Jr. Braves of the Month.

May: Perseverance (GRIT)

Someone who does not give up even when it is difficult.  An individual who is able to wait and work through difficulties towards a goal, whether they have to do with their mind, body, or emotions.

Be on the lookout for those students who have achieved May’s character trait for the month!
